Sommers, Nancy. “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers.” College composition and communication, Vol. 31, No.4 (Dec., 1980). pp. 378-388

Teaching specific revision suggestion, for a more elaborating peer response, teaches students to analyze essays in a detail manner. In order to suggest revision of an essay, we need to give a detail comment by asking question and pointing out certain misunderstanding of the topic, in other words be more specific. Peer responses usually are vague, so in order to focus further into the response, a technique called PQP- Praise- Question-Polish is used to help students focus on the task at hands as well as maintain a positive attitude toward the critique process. To focus further the response, students are put into groups to discuss and ask questions to further analyze and list characteristic of effective responses. Peer response session help students revise with more specific details and have a better understanding to give useful responses, and give the writer a specific direction for revision and tell why the revision is necessary. Praise, Question, and Polish is a great technique to teach specific revision suggestions, this technique not only helps the writer to understand their mistakes or their point of view but also the peer editor, it keeps both aware of the way the write and how certain topics should be elaborated on.

Question:
How is PQP technique described in the article? Why is it important to have Praise, Questions, and Polish parts?
Response:
The PQP technique requires group members, which helps each individual to hear it in another voice, and each individual try to identify possible changes, and then the responder’s comments on the PQP form. The technique is basically used to have as a guideline to form helpful comments for the writer, to help the writer to have a better understanding of what they need more of or less to create a better and creative essay. The PQP process is to prevent the responders to give vague or general comments. Vague comments provide little or no specific direction for revision or for transfer through praise. General comments may be useful at times because they are still too general but provide some direction for revision. The best comments are the specific comments because it provides the writer with specific direction for revision. It’s important to have Praise, Question, and Polish parts because all of these help create great comments to help the writer to revise the essay. Praise is when you ask if the writing is good, if something should be changed, and why is it good, all these steps leads to questioning the writer on certain things you didn’t understand, and leads the writer to go over his writing and try to fix his/her mistakes. Polish is when you give specific suggestion for improvement that they can make, this helps the writer rethink and consider revising his/her essay to make it understandable with details. While using the PQP technique it not only helps the writer to get some suggestions and comments over his writing, but also the students that are revising the essays, has a better understanding on how to create a great essay without many mistakes and tries to capture the reader’s attention in a detail manner.
