SQR 3: “Revision Strategies of Students Writers and Experienced Adult Writers”

Nancy Sommers mentions that there are many methods about writing, but not one for revising. Ashe did a study on young teenager to find out more on how they revise a written essay. Many have removed their attention away from revision, with very few exceptions. A student stops revising when they think they have not violated any rules of revising, in other words think their paper is perfect. Experience writers have many different strategies on revising, some from simply looking back and rereading and others to deleting a whole paragraph. Although their methods are different they often all use structural expressions such as “finding a framework,” “pattern,” or “a design.” An experience writer always imagines the reader expectations while revising. The revision strategy is to discover meaning, such as feelings that might have been forgotten while writing the essay. There is to theories on a revision process called the adoption of a holistic perspective and recursive process. The writer asks themselves, what the essay as a whole needs to have a better form, communication, etc? This allows the writer to add or delete phrases need in the essay to get the message across.

Question

How do you as a writer revise your paper?

Many people have different methods when it comes to revising this or her paper. I personally have a different method; I start writing without a purpose. My high school teacher taught me that it was called “free writing” this method is used to jot down ideas of how you feel about the topic. This method has helped me out in many ways. I start by just writing and putting out point that are important. Once I am done writing I reread what I have wrote and I find myself deleting many sentences and phrases. I have many times found myself rewriting the whole entire essay again. I find this normal, but I find strange is that I always find something wrong with my essay, no matter how many time I read it. I always add and delete phrases as I read along every time. It is important to look back at what I have written and actually think about it, in order to make it better. I do not ever have a one draft, I have many of those I cross and have marks all over my essay.

  1. I really like how you differentiated the difference between student writers and experienced writers. You gave some quotes from the article and you answered the question.
